The final section of the evening focussed on the importance and ease of publishing online. This relates to the use of blogs and wikis in learning and teaching. As an introduction the Sandaig Primary blog was demonstrated. They are able to update the site day and daily.
It was noted that the use of ICT in learning can focus heavily on assessment for learning and curriculum for excellence. The “Rate My Mates” blog produced by the Gordon Schools provided a very good example of two stars and a wish in speaking and listening. This is the stuff that we should be doing anyway. It’s not about adding some extra work.
The next stage highlighted the idea of the wiki. The best known example of this was Wikipedia. Wiki means quick in Hawaii. It can be completely public or it can be edited only by those that you invite to be part of the group. Examples highlighted were Big Nathe’s Higher Computing wiki and the photo a day for schools project.

Ewan introduced the idea of podcasting through searching for typical audio and video using iTunes. Examples particularly included some brilliant examples of modern languages such as spanish, Dutch and Chinese. There are often links to a website with the possibility for comments and feedback looking for help. Each of the Dutch podcasts in “Laura Speaks Dutch” creates each new podcast based on feedback from the last one. Others included Coffee Break Spanish which is the number one education podcast in the world.
In the next section podcasts created by schools were introduced including a poetry project from Sandaig Primary in Glasgow. These were posted to a worldwide audience and allowed comments to be left from all around the world. a snip of the radio show was also demonstrated.
David and Ewan went on to create a very quick podcast based on material recorded in the evening to demonstrate how easy it is to create. Snippets were created using a flash microphone and Garageband.

The idea of a teddy moving from one place to another is not a new one. The interactive chatting teddies project was a blogging project in Argyll and Bute where creative writing was used to talk about what the teddies did as they went on their journeys.
They received comments from across the world. There were 2000 visitors in just over a week. The teacher could include geography and citizenship and created a map on the wall. They added flags and pins to show where there visitors were coming from.
When the teddy was posted from one school to another the pupils were able to track the progress of the teddy across parcel force. They used BubbleShare in order to share the photographs of the teddy bears.
Ewan talked about creating a photo story using a series of photographs to talk about how to create a story about making a cup of coffee. Ewan then demonstrated how easy it was to create a photo story. It is easy to add a spoken commentary, write a script and tell a story.

David then highlighted the use of Flickr to show how flickr could be used to create notes on a picture such as “click here for the ingredients”. This took the user to another photograph with the ingredients and actual values.
Other examples included the documenting of an experiment in a science class, viking reenactment in school, a camping trip, art appreciation. As well as leaving the notes on the picture it is possible to add comments and start to create an online essay.

It’s the evening of the 20th of February and 200 teachers and others are at Gleniffer High School learning about the uses of ICT in learning and teaching. John Rooney gave the background to the evening, introduced Cllr Glen, David Muir and Ewan McInotsh.
Cllr Glen welcomed everyone to the evening and outlined the place of ICT in learning across Renfrewshire. He highlighted the importance of making sure that all our young people are well prepared for life in the 21st century.
John handed over to David and Ewan. As an introduction the interactive voting system was demonstrated in order to see that it worked. As this was happening Ewan introduced the idea of the use of ICT in learning. The first question was about the confidence that folk felt in relation to elearning.
Ewan talked about the importance of audience in relation to teaching and learning. The audiences that our children are already being involved in are global. For example it is now possible to add your own entry in an online encyclopaedia such as wikipedia. About half of the audience felt that they were confident or very confident in their understanding of e-learning.
During the evening there will be three main ideas explored. The voting system will be used to guage some impact.
