As part of the phase 1 pilot of Glow some of our schools took the opportunity to see what happened when they tried to access Glow using Macintosh computers running OS9. Mac OS9 is not supported by Glow but we have a lot of computers in our schools running this particular operating system. This was our first chance to see whether there would be any way that access could be provided in this way.

The result was less than satisfactory. It was actually possible to log in using Internet Explorer on Mas OS9 but the formatting of the portal was all over the place. All the web parts appeared below the left hand menu. Some teachers did say that they could use it in this form but it was less than helpful.

This does not mean that schools with a lot of Macintosh computers running OS9 must think carefully about replacing older kit and upgrading licences if they want to be able to access Glow properly.

    Bummer :(

Isn’t there an open source browser that runs on os9? Mozilla maybe, or Opera? It might be worth trying.

We’ve tried everything we can find. Apple stopped supporting OS9 a couple of years ago and as such noone is willing to develop for it. Firfox won’t run on less than OSX, neither will Camino, neither will Opera. We even foiund and old browser called iCab but it didn’t support the features required to access the portal.

Unless anyone knows different, I guess we are stuffed (technical term!)
