Mobile Phones in School

The technological developments in mobile phone technology means that these devices are becoming more and more powerful as well as becoming more available to children and young people in school. Recent articles in the educational press have suggested that mobile phones can be seen as a useful learning tool in the classroom. On the other side of the coin, many of you will have experienced the extremely difficult and negative uses of mobile phones from video clips being published on the Internet to Cyber bullying, grooming and on to phones ringing in the class. What is clear is that the technology will not go away. It is important, therefore, that our response is well thought through and provides us all with appropriate guidelines and procedures which will both protect and provide opportunity for development in the future. In order that any guidance produced be as well thought through as possible I am currently looking for examples of good practice in school. Do you have a policy or guidance statement on the use of mobile phones in school? If so, would you be willing to share it with me? Do you have any comments that you would like to make regarding the use of mobile phones in school?

This is something my school is starting to look at more. A good use in the Physics department is all the experiments being filmed on a mobile phone and put onto YouTube. Then at revision time the experiments can quickly be seen again. Physics are also contemplating using assessment by video (using a camera phone) as a way of improving the marks of those learners who can’t express themselves well by writing.
